Find homes for sale in the Florida Keys!

The Florida Keys stretch south of Miami into the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico. There are attractions for everyone including world class fishing, wreck and reef diving, tours and kayaking, or if you just want to kick back and relax, that's what the Florida Keys are all about. The Florida Keys are a wilderness of flowering jungles and shimmering seas, a jade necklace of mangrove-fringed islands dangling toward the tropics.

The Keys were only sparsely populated until the early 1900's. In 1905, however, railroad builder Henry Flagler began building the extension of his Florida railroad from Homestead to Key West. His goal was to establish a rail link to his steamships that sailed between Key West and Havana, which lies just 90 miles from Key West. The railroad was completed in 1912 and remained a lifeline to the Florida Keys until the Labor Day hurricane of 1935 washed out much of its roadbed. In 1938 the Overseas Highway, a roadway connecting Miami to Key West, was built over the railroad's old roadbeds and bridges.

On the north end of the keys, nearest the mainland, lies Key Largo,  which is becoming a bedroom community and weekend escape for mainland residents. At the bottom, 106 miles to the southwest, is Key West.

As you drive south down U.S.1, the main roadway between Key Largo and Key West, look to your left, the Atlantic with its living coral reef; and to your right, Florida Bay, the Gulf of Mexico, and the backcountry. At a few points the ocean and gulf are as far as 10 miles apart, However, in most places they're only about 1 to 4 miles apart, and on the narrowest islands, the only thing separating them is the road itself. Sunsets here are a pure, unadulterated spectacle that each evening attracts thousands of visitors and locals to the waterfront throughout the Keys.
