I wanna become a high school art teacher, but I suck at using the pottery wheel. Help!?

I don’t think I can be a art teacher now. I loooove ceramics. I love making masks and pigs and cows and everything else. My favorite part is painting everything so detailed. But I suck at the pottery wheel. I can’t make a freakin bowl for my life. I need to make 2 bowls by the end of this semester to pass the class and I can’t do it. I’m so discouraged right now. I use to love ceramics and clay but the pottery wheel is ruining my life. What are some good tips?
And I HATE glaze!!!! It makes the pieces so boring because you can’t even mix the colors or anything without the piece looking like poop!!!!! I sooooo prefer painting ceramic stuff with acrylic paint.

a lot of schools won’t have the facilities for ceramics, so why worry? My school had a single pottery wheel and while our teacher could show us the basics he was certainly not great at it. We did that also not in class, but in a voluntary after-school activity, so it was not part of the teaching syllabus.

As for your current class, get either your teacher or a patient fellow student to look what you are doing wrong. There are a lot of things you could be doing wrong and the easiest way to find out what’s wrong is watching you. Try to get a more positive attitude towards using a pottery wheel, for if you use it while feeling impatient and frustrated it really won’t help you. It’s something for feeling patient and calm.

In addition check whether your bowls need to be wheel thrown or if you can make hand built bowls. If you can do hand built pots, then you have your alternative.

As far as glazes go there are beautiful glazes and there is also a lot of things you can do with underglazes and underglaze pencils. Using just acrylics does not achieve the same effects than you can use with glazes and you would limit yourself severely if you insist in using just one technique. I would suggest you look at the work of Sergei Isupov, he does amazing paintings on clay. I also suggest to look through some ceramics books and see what you can do with glazes. You give me the impression that you don’t like glazes because you don’t know much about them and you want to treat them exactly like you would treat paint. That’s obviously not going to work, despite you can do a lot if you learn about glazes and treat them as such.
In addition acrylics won’t seal the surface in the same way and make all your clay pieces non-functional.

I also doubt whether failing a single class will make you fail your entire course of studies. It’s probably an elective, so just take another one next semester.
